I believe that consistent classification makes it easier for libraries to manage their collections and for users to find what they are looking for.
Some of my guiding principles include:
Call numbers should be as short as possible consistent with having all books on a subject together on the shelf. Subjects that often come cataloged in different areas should be merged. For example, job hunting and career books may be cataloged in business or economics. They should be together on the shelf. The catalog should not contain cryptic abbreviations like EJ, B, or LT.
